How to calculate the thickness of Laminating Film?

When buying laminating film, many people are unfamiliar with terms like "filament" and might not know how many filaments of laminating film they should choose.

The thickness of laminating film is typically measured in "filament," "C," or "mic". Here's the conversion relationship between these units: 1 filament = 1C = 10 mic = 0.01 mm. For example, an 8-filament laminating film is 80 mic thick, or 0.08 mm.

So, is the thickness of laminating film really important? The answer is yes. Thickness affects not only the performance of the laminating machine but also the user experience.

Thermal Laminating Film

If the laminating film is too thin and your laminating machine cannot adjust the temperature, it may bubble, feel too soft, and impact the quality of use. Conversely, if it's too thick and the machine's temperature cannot reach the required level, it can affect transparency and adhesion, making the film opaque or improperly bonded. It can also be costly and challenging to manage the machine's temperature.

How to Choose the Right Laminating Film?

We generally recommend an 8-filament (80 mic) laminating film, as this thickness works well with all laminating machines. It strikes a balance between hardness and softness and is compatible with most machines.

Document Protection Needs: Choose the thickness based on the importance and frequency of use of the documents or photos. For batch laminating where a premium feel isn't required, you might opt for a film with a thickness below 7 filaments, such as 5.5 filaments, which offers cost efficiency.

Machine Compatibility: Ensure the laminating film matches the laminating machine you own. Basic machines typically handle 8-10 filaments of film plus paper up to 200g. Using a film that's too thick may cause opacity, while one that's too thin can lead to burning and bubbling.

Special Thickening Purposes: For items like menus and driver's licenses, if you prefer a firmer feel, select a thickness of 12.5 filaments or more. Note that this thicker film requires a professional laminating machine with four rolls.

For beginners or users with standard laminating machines, we especially recommend the 8-filament laminating film. It is a common choice due to its moderate hardness and softness, making it ideal for most documents. It also works well with most machines, offering a better laminating experience.
