Many customers who use laminating film often ask us, "Can I print on laminating film?" Today, YIDU will explain this in plain language.

1. Let's clarify: What is laminating film?

Laminating film is commonly known as thermal laminating film (also called laminating film). It is widely used on surfaces such as ID cards, menus, documents, and photos. It is waterproof, stain-resistant, and scratch-resistant, giving documents a more premium look.

Laminating film generally consists of two layers:

Outer layer: PET material (hard, transparent, and glossy)

Inner layer: EVA adhesive layer (melts when heated and adheres to the paper)

2. Want to print on laminating film? It depends on the printing step!

Printing before laminating-Recommended!

This is the most common and simplest method. First, print your desired content on the paper, then seal it with laminating film. The printed content is clear, and the laminating film protects the printed image and text, making it resistant to fading and loss.

Printing after laminating-a bit of a challenge!

Want to print on the surface after laminating? This is more challenging.

The reasons are:

The PET surface is smooth, making it difficult for ink to adhere;

Inkjet printer ink "floats" on it, making it difficult to dry;

Laser printers require high temperatures, which can easily cause the laminating film to deform or bubble.

However, it's not completely impossible. You'll need:

Use specialized printable laminating film (with a coated surface);

Use specialized equipment such as a UV printer or thermal transfer printer.

3. Some people also ask: Can you write on laminating film?

Yes, you can! However, we recommend using:

Grease-based pens (such as markers);

Erasable whiteboard markers;

Paint pens (for smooth surfaces)
